The Birch Lake Project

Revitalizing the Range
Respecting the Environment

The Birch Lake Project, a proposeal for underground copper-nickel-platinum mining would:

  • create much-needed jobs for the Iron Range;
  • generate substantial revenues for local communities and Minnesota;
  • reduce our dependence on foreign sources of essential metals;

while protecting Birch Lake, the nearby Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the surrounding environment.

The Birch Lake Project is currently entering its Pre-Feasibility Phase, meaning there is much study and work to be done before it can be permitted and begin mining operations.  Franconia Minerals, the developer of the Project, and its consultants, are engaged in exploration and environmental scoping, on-going technical and engineering analysis, and investigation of design and methodology options in order to develop firm, approved plans for the Project.

During this time and throughout the project’s life, Franconia welcomes participation from community members, environmental and other interest groups and political entities.  It is the Company’s mission to conduct its operations in an open, transparent manner and engage in constructive dialogue with all constituents.  The Company’s goal is to permit and develop the Project and bring its benefits to northeastern Minnesota and the state as a whole in an environmentally responsible way.
